In our quest to involve communities as the first line of defense against crime, we hit the road and moved around different Kampala suburbs to answer one question, who needs our help most urgently.
Among the many communities we visited, the following neighborhoods stood out and we concluded that this needed urgent attention. These are, Katwe, Nansana, Katanga, Mukubila Zone, Kabalagala, Kibuli, Kasokosoko, Kireka,Mengo,Makerere Kikoni,Bwaise, Natete, Ndeeba, Nakulabye, Kigowa.
We considered the following, how bad is the current security situation? what the most common acts of crime in the neighborhood? what time do most of these crimes occur? what are the current security measures in place? how effective are the current measures? how affordable are the current measures? Do they desire something better, effective yet affordable? how involved and dedicated is the local community to neighborhood watch? if there was a network to support neighborhood watch, how vigilant and responsive would they be?
We also took time to note the gender and ages of the members of the community most affected by insecurity in the chosen neighborhoods.
From our findings, the most common crime is burglary, homicides, kidnappings, and conmen to mention but a few.
Our mission is to resolve the above, We would love to hear from you so that we can add you to our list of neighborhoods to consider. Is your neighborhood safe? Do you feel your neighborhood needs to be safer than it is right now? Then comment and let’s hear your thoughts, write to [email protected] or call +256772378336 / +256704212445
ALERT: watch out for our next article where we share real-life experiences from victims of crime from KIGOWA, one of the communities we visited in this quest.
